January, 2008

House of Hope Program, Salt Lake City, Utah:

1.         Creative Writing Teacher for Women (Volunteer position): to teach 1 ½ hour evening class per week for women in residential addiction treatment center near U of U. Must be willing and able to teach for 10-12 sessions and have co-teacher if needed. Goal is to help women who are working toward recovery experience the therapeutic benefit of expressing themselves in writing (poetry, essay, prose, etc.) and to improve creativity, writing skills, communication/feedback skills and self-esteem. Clients have experienced multiple traumas and losses--domestic violence, sexual abuse, homelessness, mental health issues, poverty, incarceration, loss of children/family, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening health conditions--as well as the drug and alcohol abuse that they are in residential treatment to address. They need a volunteer teacher to help them hear their own voices and share their experience with others in writing. Send letter of interest to Lisa Heaton at lheaton@uafslc.org.

2.         Art Therapy Teacher for Women (Volunteer position): to teach weekly evening class in art therapy for 12 women in residential addiction treatment center near U of U. Must be willing and able to teach for 10-12 sessions and have co-teacher if needed. Goal is to help women who are working toward recovery experience the therapeutic benefit of expressing themselves through art and the discussion of artwork and to improve creativity, communication/feedback skills and self-esteem. They need a volunteer art therapy teacher to help them gain insight and catharsis through an artistic medium to balance the mostly left-brain/cognitive teaching methods of most treatment programs. Send letter of interest to Lisa Heaton at lheaton@uafslc.org.

3.         Creative Movement Teacher for 3-5 year olds (Volunteer position): to teach ½ hour class weekly to preschoolers at the Hope Center for Children, a program for young children whose mothers are in substance abuse treatment at House of Hope. Also, 1 hour twice monthly evening class for moms and kids together to help build creativity, bonding and self-expression for high-risk families in residential care. Many of these kids have been sexually/physically abused or neglected and sensitivity to these issues is needed in a teacher who can communicate well with young children to help them express themselves and experience their bodies in positive, healthy ways. The other goal of this project is just to have fun with creative movement exercises. Prefer teacher who can commit to a minimum of 10-12 weeks and who is experienced in working with young children. Background check required. Send letter of interest to Lisa Heaton at lheaton@uafslc.org.

4.         Piano Teacher for 3-7 year olds (Volunteer position): Seeking piano teacher experienced in working with young children to come to the Hope Center for Children and teach basic music appreciation to small classes of children as well as 15 minute introduction to the piano classes for individual young children to expose them to music, the piano, and to build self-esteem/confidence in learning something new. Teacher must have a love for music and young (sometimes loud and wiggly) children and be willing to donate an hour or two in the morning each week to help us create a music program for the high-risk kids in our care. Luckily, we have a nice piano, gifted to the Hope Center by a generous donor to honor his late wife. Background check required. Send letter of interest to Lisa Heaton at lheaton@uafslc.org.

5.         AA Meeting for Women Chair (Volunteer position): Seeking mature team of two women familiar with AA to chair residential closed AA meeting in residential setting. Must have at least 5 years in recovery and be able to commit to six months of weekly evening meetings with a partner to support and fill in for each other. Goal is to provide healthy leadership for women new in recovery to learn AA Twelve-step process and mentoring in step work. Adherence to confidentiality laws, good boundaries and communication skills required. Background check must be completed in advance. New meeting to start in January.
